They are preoccupied with the core business; relate to the current competitive landscape; rarely look beyond 2-3 years out; have a company-centric inside-out perspective; and tend to be analytical, numbers-focused exercises. And that is OK!!
Large companies need a precise today-for-today strategic plan to make sure that everyone is rowing in the same direction. But they also need a today-for-tomorrow strategy that focuses on core transformation AND beyond the core; looks out 3-10 years or longer; has an ecosystem-centric outside-in perspective; and imagines new types of competitors.
